According to my original federal complaint, Sheriff Mike Chitwood was repeatedly placed on notice of alleged financial crimes connected to the Volusia County Clerk’s Office and its collection practices through nearly 20 unanswered emails and five Internal Affairs complaints submitted between November 8, 2022, and February 23, 2023—including documentation concerning multiple alleged fraud victims. On February 20, 2023, while I was at Internal Affairs seeking accountability during a period when I believed my life was under threat, Chitwood confronted me outside his office, looked directly at me, and demanded, “What are you doing here?” in what I perceived as a deliberate act of intimidation. To me, the timing, his apparent recognition of me, and the continued failure to meaningfully address the documented allegations raise deeply troubling questions about his knowledge of—and possible connection to—the broader pattern of alleged financial misconduct and constitutional violations described in my federal case.
